The Power of a Smile

There are moments in life that remind us just how resilient the human spirit can be. Watching my best friend, Kerry, as he fights his way through recovery at Kessler Rehabilitation Center is one of those moments.

Since starting his rehabilitation journey, Kerry has been undergoing daily weekday sessions that challenge him in ways most of us can’t begin to imagine. Occupational therapy has him relearning the simple yet essential act of swallowing, while physical therapy focuses on movement—stretching, guiding, and encouraging his body to regain strength. Each day, he’s increasing his activity, taking small but significant steps forward.

I had the chance to visit him on Sunday and again this evening. Yesterday, I could have sworn he gave us a little smile—that smile, the one that’s always been infectious and full of life. It was small and brief, but unmistakable. It was Kerry.

The left side of his body is active, while the right remains a bit dormant—something expected after a stroke. But progress is happening. He’s opening his right eye, squeezing our hands with intention, and even, with enough verbal encouragement, slowly placing a ball into my hand. Tremors come and go throughout the day, but that’s part of the process. What’s constant is his determination. Kerry is a fighter, and I see it every time I visit him.

Through it all, his wife Filana, has been by his side, showing the kind of unwavering love that speaks louder than words. She returned to remote work this week, balancing her days between home and the rehab center, never missing a beat when it comes to supporting him. Her presence is a reminder of just how powerful love and commitment can be in the healing process.

And then there’s the community—family, friends, and loved ones who continue to visit, bringing warmth, kindness, and encouragement. Every hand held, every hug, every shared memory is a reminder that Kerry is deeply loved, and that love and remembrance is what fuels his journey forward.

This road to recovery isn’t an easy one, but if there’s anyone strong enough to walk it, it’s Kerry. We’re here, every step of the way, cheering him on.
